Description of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The
Cavalier is a true toy spaniel, weighing between 13 and 18 pounds and about 12
to 13 inches tall at the shoulder. They descended from the Toy Spaniels of
Europe and first appeared in the courts of England with the reign of Queen Mary.
The breed received its name from King Charles II.
Cavaliers
are fun to show in the breed ring but are also excellent obedience and agility
competitors. They also make wonderful therapy dogs delighting many in nursing
homes and healthcare centers. Fearless and sporting in nature, yet gentle
and affectionate; a Cavalier will thrive as an integral part of family life
close to the people he loves.
The Cavalier comes in four color varieties:
Blenheim - Rich chestnut markings well broken up on pearly white. The chestnut on the head must extend around the eyes as well as down over the ears. There should be a blaze of white between the eyes and ears in the centre of which may be a lozenge or 'Blenheim spot' unique to the Blenheim Cavalier, highly desirable, but not essential. |
Tricolor - Black and
white well spaced, broken up, with tan markings over eyes, cheeks, inside ears,
inside legs

Black and Tan - Raven
black with tan markings above the eyes, on cheeks, inside ears, on chest and
legs |
Ruby - Whole colored rich red. White markings undesirable.
