Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club Newsletter - August 2007

by Kaye Walsh, President     (808) 237 8472

Attn. October 27, 2007 2:00 PM - Halloween Bash on the Beach - Mark your Calendar Now!

It's time to plan our next big outing and potluck and we are extremely fortunate to be the guests of Bruce and Linda Vollert at their family home directly on Kailua Beach. There is a pool and Jacuzzi as well as swimming on the beach so bring your chairs, bathing suits and something for the potluck table. The house has a large cooking pit and you can cook on the fire if you wish. As usual, the club will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, cold drinks and bottled water.

The big day will commence with check in starting at 2:00 PM and will be followed by a business meeting at which we will give out some great door prizes, introduce new members and elect new officers and directors for the coming year and then on to

The Big Halloween Costume Contest - All dogs to be in costume of some sort, fancy or not, your choice, but all dogs must have a costume, even if only a hat (You would be surprised at how much a hat can dress up that Cavalier!). We will have beautiful ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with the Club logo as well as a ribbon for the Most Original (who gets the most spontaneous applause!).

After the contest we will adjourn for some fun with the Cavaliers either on the beach or just playing around the yard and pool as well as putting out the "spread".  At our June Potluck we had over 50 people and even more than that in attending Cavaliers so plan now for a wonderful day with your human and Cavalier friends.  As we get closer to the date I will send out a map with driving and parking instructions. Please let me know if you will attend, how many people, how many Cavaliers and what category of food you plan to bring (salad, dessert, main, etc.).

One of our directors, Linda Vollert, tells us that the Humane Society really needs old towels, so if you would like, please bring an old towel to the party and we will see that they are delivered.

Club Hike - Saturday, August 25, 2007 @ 4:00PM

Many of you joined us on our first Club hike up the Old Pali Road, some part way and some all the way to the top. Please plan to join us for our next hike on the Maunawili Ditch Trail This hike/walk was profiled recently in the Advertiser and I confirmed with the outdoor writer that it is a good trail for taking dogs.  It is mostly flat and through trees so again this walk will be good for all levels. You and your Cavalier(s) can walk as far as you wish and then turn around. It is a 2.7 mile horseshoe trail so the hardy walkers can go the whole way and then walk back on the road. Since it is summer, we thought it would be better to start later in the afternoon.

Please let me know by email or phone if you will attend, how many people and how many dogs. Our cell number is 284-3109 in case you need some directions while you are on the road.

Driving instructions, from Waimanalo heading north on Kalaniana'ole Hwy, turn left onto Kumuhau Street. Follow Kumuhau 1 mile, and then turn right on Waikupanaha Street. Continue past Mahiku Place until you reach a fence and gate on the right. Park along the street. The trailhead is beyond the gate, branching right off the dirt road. Coming over the Pali head towards Kailua, then turn right on Kalaniana'ole 3.1 miles just past Olomana Golf Course then right on Kumuhau and follow the above instructions.

Windward Hawaiian Dog Fanciers Assn - September 29 & 30, 2007
Samuel Wilder King Intermediate School, 46-155 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe, HI 96744 (outdoors and informal)

The fall lineup of purebred dog shows is coming up and several of our members will be attending and showing their beautiful Cavaliers. If you haven't ever been to a show, or been to one recently, please plan to attend and cheer on your fellow members. Even though there are very few of us that have show-ring Cavaliers, it is a good opportunity to see them beautifully groomed and on their best behavior!

Takako Tajima (T.T) will be showing her new puppy Pino, son of the famous Cavalier of the Year, Casper, and I believe Gerald Luke and Joanne Fujimoto will be showing both Hokulani and her son, Bailey (also sired by Casper).  T.T, Gerald & Joanne invite club members to visit their tent before and after the Cavaliers go in the ring.  They will be happy to discuss grooming a Cavalier for the ring and explain how the dog show works.  T.T. said " I am quite sure there are some club members interested in showing their Cavaliers, but hesitate because they don't know what to do.  The first step is the usually the biggest step. I would like to help this introduction part."

Summer Commander, our terrific junior handler, will also be in the ring. If you haven't seen Summer with her Champion Aloha Return to Sender you are missing a real treat.

If you are interested in attending the HKC or Windward Shows, please send me an email and I will let you know the times Cavaliers are scheduled to show on each of the show days.  That information isn't available until shortly before the show.  We will also post the information on our club's website.

Club Shirts

We still have a few club logo shirts available. We won't be ordering again until all these are gone, so if you would like a shirt (or another one), send me an email or give me a call to see what we have on hand.

Cavalier of the Month

If you have been to our website recently you will have enjoyed seeing pictures of some of our club Cavaliers. We would really like everyone to take a turn at being Cavalier of the Month by submitting a picture or two or three to our webmaster Jim Arcate.  It's good to see all those little faces and to know something about them makes it more fun when you meet them at club events, so please go through all those photos and send them to Jim. If they aren't digital, you can mail them and we can scan them in.

Annual Meeting

As I mentioned earlier, we would like to have our elections for officers and directors changed from December to October, as there seemed to be many conflicts with members unable to attend a December meeting. Since we are not incorporated, our by-laws can be amended informally. We discussed this at the last Board meeting, and unless anyone objects with good reason, we will amend our documents to schedule the annual meeting in October of each year. That way we can always have a Halloween party!

Cavalier Education

Have you attended a class with your Cavalier here in Hawaii that you think would be useful and fun for your fellow Club members? (or conversely a class that you didn't think was all it should be). It could be conformation, obedience, rally or puppy training. We would like to know about it so we could put the information on our Club website. You could either write a little story about it or call and tell me about it and I will write the details for you.

Future Events

A club like ours is only what we as members all together, make it. We would like to know what kind of activities you would be interested in and any ideas you have for meetings, events, seminars and so forth, so please send me an email or call me. We had previously discussed attempting to have Rally classes but we didn't have enough interest to justify the cost of equipment and a trainer, but if we had enough interested people, we could just buy the equipment and try to figure it out ourselves. After all, we are mostly an informal club with pets that we love dearly so what we want to do is have fun.

Puppies

We regularly have inquiries from members or potential members who are either looking for puppies, or are looking for stud service so don't forget to let me know if you any any puppies coming up that aren't already spoken for or if you have a male that might be available for stud. I can put you in touch with each other and who knows what might happen.
