Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Hawaii

December 2006 Newsletter

By Kaye Walsh, President

Thank you to all the members, new and old, who attended our Annual Meeting on December 2, 2006 at Waikiki Playground and especially to those who participated in the "Walk Around the Zoo". What a sight they made, all those beautiful Cavaliers, marching down the sidewalk. We had island visitors stop by and admire the Cavs and especially Hokulani's puppies brought to the event by Gerald Luke. After the meeting we had refreshments and some good playtime for everyone as well as the walk.

Our website is finally creeping up in the Internet search engines, people are finding us through the website, some joining the club, and some hoping we can find puppies for them. Word of mouth (and walking on the beach) is working well too. We had several members join the club at this meeting and we welcome them to the group.

As to business matters, we have renewed our liability insurance for 2007 and registered our trade name with the State of Hawaii . A quorum was present at the meeting and new officers and directors were elected for the coming year: Kaye Walsh, President and Director, Jim Arcate, Vice President, Director and Webmaster, Melanie Johnson, Treasurer and Director, Brian Walsh, Secretary and Director (temporary) and Susan Hodge, Director. Brian is only serving until the next directors' meeting, as we did not have any volunteers for the position. We have since spoken with another member who is interested on serving on the Board and I will continue to take care of the secretarial duties.

We submitted a small article to the magazine of the national Cavalier club, "The Royal Dispatch" for the January issue and I hope to have a copy for our next members meeting so those who might like to subscribe to the magazine can see an issue. The new editor intends to send a copy to each of the regionals.

December is a difficult month for an event on a Saturday and many members were not able to attend due to work and family commitments (I received a lot of "I wish I could be there but" emails). That month was in the bylaws from another club on which we based our original documents. The Board will discuss changing this date and other changes to those documents during the coming year so that our annual meeting will be one that everyone can attend.

Dues remain at $25 per member ($5 junior) and are now payable for 2007. Please send your check to CKCS Club of Hawaii at PO Box 628 , Kaaawa , HI 96730 . Dues not paid by January 31 will result in loss of membership and those members will no longer be on the email list for newsletters and events.

We hope to have at least four events for all members next year, as our two potlucks were so popular and well attended.  The Johnson's have graciously volunteered to have at least one potluck at their home and we will plan other events, which should be fun for all even if they are on leash. There was quite a bit of interest in participating in Pet Expo in May and we are currently looking into the requirements for that. Many of the members present said they would like to participate by spending time in the booth so it would not be left to just a few. It should be quite fun to spend a few hours talking to people about our lovely dogs and spending some time with your fellow members and Cavs. We may also have our own small versions of "Paws on the Path" and take some easy walks and hikes as a group in places where everyone could participate. We also will plan to have some health and grooming seminars.

The Cavalier booth at the Eukanuba show earlier this month took the award for best booth in the show. It is really attractive and you can see pictures at http://ackcsc.org/ on the national club home page. It has an English theme and you won't believe how excited they were to get the award.

As to the official Humane Society "Paws on the Path", there is a hike planned for this Saturday, Dec. 30, at 8:30 AM meeting at Mokuleia. The trail is called Peacock Flats and is paved with great views of the coastline. Information can be obtained on the Hawaiian Humane Society website under Events with directions on where to meet, what to expect and difficulty. Brian and I are attending with our dogs and will provide a report.

We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year and know we will all enjoy getting together again soon.

Kaye Walsh, President
